Movie Recommend:

The Painted Veil is a beautifully filmed movie set in the lush Southern Chinese province of Guangxi. It is the story of a dysfunctional young British couple, played by Naomi Watts and Edward Norton, dealing with their marital problems in the midst of a devastating cholera outbreak. Norton’s character is a bacteriologist/doctor who travels from Shanghai to a remote countryside village to investigate and treat the outbreak. The movie is set in 1920s colonial China meanwhile anti-foreign sentiments are growing.
The most appealing aspect of the film for me was the scenery. This part of China is breathtaking and I swooned at every scene. I traveled in the area the movie was filmed – around Guilin, along the Li River – last year. The movie is based on the novel by W. Somerset Maugham and is reminiscent of the Merchant-Ivory films. The DH thought it was a bit slow and dangerously close to the realm of “chick flicks,” but I suspect he enjoyed it anyway.
