I'm an American expat living on the fringe of Chinese society. Thanks to a lifetime spent moving around, I often feel like an outsider. This blog explores life in Beijing, China, the occasional aviation topic, expat issues, random travel experiences and interesting things I see, read and hear. Light is a relative term. That photograph includes the luggage of 4 women…on a 21 day trip! Not too shabby – considering my last weekend get away.
I kind of thought that photo could be interpreted two ways, and I’d leave it up to the reader to decide – 1. if you don’t want to travel really, really light, you can always get someone to carry your luggage for you or 2. this is traveling light.
Hell yea that was light – carry on bags for a 21 day trip!? When I was at the Koh Samui airport last month, what struck me was the amount of baggage many of the tourists had. Some had only backpacks, I figured they were local expats on a weekend getaway, others had a carry on style bag and little more, but the majority had full-on monster bags. All I could think was – how many sarongs & swimsuits do they have stuffed in there?!
I used to travel with monster bags, and sometimes I still do. But honestly, I do feel a lot more relaxed and happy when I travel light. I think I’ve discovered the secret – you’ve got to have a closet of clothes & accessories in all your destinations, like those movie stars who keep storage closets in Paris and London. Yea right!!
