Road Show

After visiting Medinaceli and a night in Guadalajara, we headed north through Soria to the wine region of La Rioja and the city of Logrono, where the DH’s brother lives with his family.

The rolling hills of Soria were covered in bright yellow sunflowers. It was painfully difficult to capture the seas of flowers on film and you’ll have to excuse most of these photos, because they have all been taken from the passenger seat of a Peugeot 206 at varying speeds (two lane highway) of 80 to 120 km/hr. And I’m no photographer!

Sunflowers

We passed quite a few churches and monuments. Some just seemed sort of stuck in the middle of nowhere. It is towards the end of the hot summer, and the hay fields have all been cut. Everywhere in this region the colors are varying shades of sand and golden, with bit of green mixed in here and there.

Who knows

Eventually the road leads to a mountain pass and another one of those windy roads that the DH loves. On the other side of the mountain is La Rioja and more windy road through a canyon that eventually opens out into Logrono.

There are lots of little villages tucked into the curves of the river and the sides of the canyon and even more as it smooths out onto the plain.

Yet another church

We spent the weekend relaxing at the DH’s brother house at the edge of the city where the weather was too good to be true!

Next up – a drive through La Rioja to Pais Vasco (Basque Country) and the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao. Yes, that’s right, I’ve got over 300 photos of this trip, most of which were taken from the car. ;)

Nice. I love Soria. Lots of little abandoned villages.
