I Guess It’s Fall

in China, Expat Life, Food

because the Di Gua man is back on the streets. Yummy! Baked sweet potatoes! (If anyone cares to correct my Pinyin, I really have no idea if it is di gua or di guo.)

I’ll try to be back on the blog more often, too. My semester assignments are winding down and I’ll be done with the MLS before I know it.

Just wanted to pop in and prove this blog is not dead!

Di(ground) Gua(melon) it is. I don’t know why the mainlanders treat it as a melon. I guess some sweet potatoes like those in S.E. Asia can be as large as a cantaloupes hence the reference to melon. Chinese outside China call them Fan Shu.

When we were kids in Malaysia, we used to roast sweet potatoes in slow burning charcoal. Yum!

Thanks, Peter. The gua part is strange to me, too, because the sweet potatoes that we get are really normal sized, not large at all! They are delicious, though. The Di Gua man in our neighborhood knows that we like them VERY cooked, so that they are soft and squishy and caramelized. So good!
