Not Happy…Not Happy at All

in Back Home, Expat Life

I really wanted to write about my wonderful whirlwind stay in Vienna. I will write about it, but maybe not for a few days. I am in no mood at the moment to write happy thoughts. I wrote last week that the DH finally got a visa to the US, but I was wrong. He was denied. MY country rejected him AGAIN. I can’t even begin to tell you how confused and angry I am. Why the denial? They don’t believe that he demonstrated compelling evidence that he plans to leave the US at the end of his training. I suppose the fact that an awesome job making lots more money than he could make in the US is not compelling enough. I mean, who wouldn’t want to stay in the Good Ol’ US of A now that it is a financial mess? Never mind the fact that the one suffering here is a US Citizen. Way to take care of your people!

Quite frankly I feel that this is just unbelievable bullshit.

You want to know the best part? The consulate told him that his visa would take two weeks to process. A few days ago, he received a call saying his passport was ready to be picked up. He had pre-arranged a courier service, so it arrived a few days later. Imagine his surprise when he opened the envelope to reveal a mysteriously empty passport. No US visa. No explanation. Nothing. (For visa denials, there is supposed to be a form outlining the reasons for denial and what can be done to appeal the decision. We got nothing.) He had been led to believe the visa was being “processed” when really it was going through some sort of review. Nice of the consulate to tell us that. Nice of the consulate to tell us the visa was denied by way of an empty passport. Nice communication. I suppose it is all in a day’s work for government employees.

I am so angry right now that I feel like burning my passport. I mean, seriously, wtf?! The DH is from a European country, which is part of the visa waiver program. If he really wanted to go to the US and stay, he could just get on an airplane and do it, he doesn’t require a tourist visa. Why the hell would he go through the trouble of getting an non-immigrant visa if his intention was just to stay? We could have saved $4000+ and just bought an airline ticket.

Unbelievable bullshit. Sorry friends and family, but I do not think a visit to the US is in my immediate or near future. I don’t think I could stand it. Once again we look to Canada, the one country that has managed to always be there for us.

Thanks Khadijah. Still trying to understand but don’t think I ever will. I lay awake at night drafting complaints to the Embassy… all that does is keep me awake. Thank god for Canada.
