Remaking Linyi

December 28, 2008

in China, Expat Life, Linyi

There is a street in Linyi full of little barbecue joints and restaurants. Our favorite Korean place is there. Or was… a couple months ago we discovered the street to be barricaded, many of the shops and restaurants shuttered. Ba Yi Lu, (Eight One Road), is undergoing a transformation. From a slightly shabby road like any other in Linyi to a slightly Disneyfied, modern take on a traditional Chinese street. From buildings of jumbled size and appearance to united facades. From dingy walls, uneven sidewalks and dirty gutters to paved pedestrian walkways with trees and benches. From average to exceptional. Or it will be, soon.

This weekend I took a walk down the street, snapping photos of the construction. I surprised many of the workers who were quite shocked to see me there.

I’ll be checking back in a month or so…
