La Costa Verde

in Asturias, Photo Friday, Spain, Travel

The Northern Coast, near Cabo Peñas, Spain

I’m not having the best day today, (Nothing major, just didn’t sleep well last night and I’m ready for the weekend.), so I thought I would post a picture of my favorite travel destination and the place I would love to be right now.

Continuing the theme from last week, this is a photo from the northern Spanish province of Asturias (actually, it’s a principality). Which is here:

The northern coast is known as la costa verde, the green coast. It is a place steeped in mythology with a decidedly Celtic flavor. It is the place I feel most at home in Spain. This is a photo looking east, down the coast towards Asturias’ northern most point, Cabo Peñas. I’ve written about Asturias many times before, visit my Spain & Asturias categories for more posts.

This post is part of Photo Friday featuring travel photos. See more at Delicious Baby.

Wow, if you didn’t tell me Spain, I would have guessed around the Carmel area of California.
Hope your weekend nearly has you in its grasp!

Spain is definitely somewhere I’d love to go again. Thanks for the mini virtual visit!

I’ve never been to that part of Spain. It looks gorgeous and rugged. I’m adding it to my must-see travel list …

Amie – if you like outdoorsy activities it is a great place in the Spring/Summer! Lots of hiking (at all levels), mountain climbing, rock climbing, canoeing, canyoneering, and of course, beaches. Just hope for a few days of sun!

I’m with Peter — it looks like California to me! And yet oceans away…
Beautiful shot!

Angela – I’ve only ever been to Southern California (San Diego & Anaheim), but I have heard lots of comparisons to the more rugged parts of California’s coastline. The surfing culture is definitely alive in northern Spain. A bit more towards the Basque Country, but Asturias has her surfers too!

Ahh, I love Asturias and the green coast too and surprisingly, I have 4 good friends who are natives from there. One of them now lives in our Andalusian village where we have been wintering on our open ended world tour.

When we have a very rare, drizzly, dark rainy day here, she always, this is like my home. If we have a sunny day there, they think something is wrong! Ha!

It is true, that Green Spain ( or Celtic Spain, is just like Ireland and Scotland weather wise, so that can get to some).

It was quite nice when we were there in June, but almost every day has some rain, even in the best of times. The dreary weather would get to me, but if I ever move to Spain, I would live in Andalusia in the winter, and have a summer place in Green Spain. ;)

Yes, Soultravelers3, you are right about the clouds and rain! It is not a proper week without at least 3 or 4 days of it! Fortunately, that is the perfect weather for me, as I overheat and burn to a crisp in Andalusia! I think I’ve got a pretty good percentage of Celtic and Swedish blood, though, with super fair skin. So Asturias is the place for me. Still… I adore those lovely white villages in the south…
