Snappers & Hoppers

in China, Food, Linyi, Wordless Wednesday

Technically it is illegal to take photos in the supermarket here, but no one seemed to care when I shot these. And how could I resist?

What’s on offer at Linyi’s RT-Mart?

Turtles at 19.8 RMB per 500kg

The bullfrogs were only 15.5RMB per 500kg. What a steal!
And what is up with the lemon wedges?

Four varieties of shell-less turtle, two varieties of hard-shell turtle, small sea snakes and bullfrogs were available. Because I showed interest, a crowd of curious Chinese soon formed. They all claimed turtle is delicious. (SIL? What do you think?)

See more Wordless Wednesday here.

I’ve had turtle and enjoyed it…looking at them doesn’t make me lick my lips to be honest. I am not a fan of frog’s legs – if it tastes like chicken then eat chicken dang it!!! Do you have any idea how they prepare the bullfrog??

I’ve never seen bullfrog in a restaurant here and no one in the office has ever had it so… no. I’ll take your word on the turtle. The ones without a shell are pretty darn gross looking, at least to me!

Hi Roy! Yea, I don’t think there are enough Tums for some of the things I’ve been offered here, although overall the food is delicious.

I’ve had turtle before, but I didn’t know I was eating it. I thought it tasted a little strange and didn’t much enjoy it. One afternoon in Northern China, I was invited out to lunch by some friends. As it turned out, we went to a restaurant that specialized in turtle soup. They killed the poor thing right in front of us and then mixed it into the broth. I lost my appetite and picked at the rest of my meal, claiming I wasn’t hungry anymore. My friends didn’t seem perturbed and continued to eat with relish. Hopefully that was my last experience with turtles for din-din.

Okay, so I could probably handle it if it was already in something. I’ve had frog legs before and even gone looking for them with my brothers. Seeing the live version though and thinking about preparing them myself freaks me out!

@Carrie – How awful! I’m prepared to eat almost anything, but having the turtle killed in front of you? No thanks!

@Lori – I can’t even cut up and prepare my own chicken let alone frog legs!! haha no joke, I’m very squeamish with meat. That’s what I’ve got the DH along for. ;)
