Not your typical travel photo…

Visiting Kuwait’s Fairgrounds, 1992
After the Gulf War ended, Kuwait was left with a huge amount of discarded Iraqi weaponry. Much of it was left in the desert for later recovery. Some was moved to the Kuwaiti Fairgrounds where it was on display to the public. My guess is that these workers were Egyptian. They were, like us, taking advantage of their free time for a stroll around the macabre museum of tanks, artillery and assorted mortar launchers.

Amazing and amazingly sad that we (and I mean that globally) continue to leave our litter around the world.

Makes you think…so this isn’t your typical tourist attraction, but probably more interesting.

After my kids spent an hour climbing around an old steam train the other day, I bet they’d log some serious time on these machines. Then again, explaining the concept of why these vehicles exist is the tough part. Truly a unique photo!

Wonder if these things are still there more than 15 years later?

Thanks everyone for stopping by!
@Beth – It is litter, isn’t it? I hadn’t thought of it that way. I agree.
@Lorraine – There was a large tank located in the middle of a beach resort that was a huge hit with kids.
@Dominique – All of the equipment was taken away from the Fairgrounds by 1993. The desert was covered with military litter but was mostly cleaned up by the late 90s. The occasional landmine and bomblet remain, hidden by sand.
Yes, it’s sad!
My husband was in Kuwait on business this fall. It seems to have changed somewhat. Reminds me to drag out his roller coaster picture for a future Photo Friday.

Hi Bridget, from what my friends tell me, I probably wouldn’t recognize the place! That’s what happens when 15 years go by! When you say roller coaster, do you mean a roller coaster in Kuwait?! We definitely didn’t have one of those when I lived there… the Iraqis had destroyed the amusement park!
Yes, If I remember correctly he did bring back a picture of a roller coaster in Kuwait. Since I blog alot about amusement parks and wrote a book about Legoland, I thought this was kind of cool
. He also says that for several months of the year everyone goes camping, so he passed by many tents planted next to oil wells!
