First a little mythbusting – you can’t actually see the Great Wall from space. Second – if you have the chance to visit Beijing, you might want to see both the old and new wall. The contrast:

A section of the Great Wall – reconstructed for tourists, at Badaling, June 2006

A section of the Great Wall – still in ruins, at an undisclosed location, January 2006, arranged by Ting’s Tours
So maybe you can’t see it from space, but it is still a pretty great big wall. See more travel photos at Delicious Baby‘s Photo Friday.

Define ‘seeing it from space’? You can see almost anything from space. That’s how Google Earth works!
Maybe you can’t see it from the moon but you can see it from a satellite

Haha okay, let’s say I was busting the myth that was around before Google Earth & satellites. But just for clarity’s sake, here’s my definition: if I were floating around up there, you know, in outer space, just to the right of the moon, and I glanced down at the “chicken” shape that is China, I wouldn’t see the Great Wall. Obviously, I’m no rocket scientist.
On my list of places we must visit!

My list is getting too long! Too much of the world to see!
This, too, is high on my list of places to visit. I would love to get here in the next year or two. I really like the picture showing the wall in ruins at a section. I guess I didn’t realize there were sections in disrepair.

In fact, Jen, I think most of the wall is in ruins. There are lots of places where you can see the ruined parts, but not all of them are technically open to the public. I’ve heard stories of people hiking the entire wall, which is something like 6,000km long! Here’s a recent article: http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-04/18/content_11211818.htm
Thanks for stopping by!
I need to see both!!!!!!! However, I really did believe you can see it from outer space:)

I’d love to go to China! They have such an amazing history, thanks for the pic of the old wall section too, I hadn’t realised there was the old and the new.

Nice juxtaposition! The old wall reminds me of something like a ‘secret garden’ waiting to be discovered.

That’s how it felt, since we were the only ones there that day! But it took quite a little hike to get up to it. Whew, it wore me out.
I love how Lonely Planet describes it: you may not be able to see the wall from space, but you can possibly smell the toilets [Summer/high tour season!]

I love that!!
I didn’t realize part of it was in such disrepair. Looks amazing at any rate.

Yes baby you almost died in the trek up!
It ain’t that great…
Well, I don’t know about almost dying, but yes, it was a bit of a workout. How embarrassing. LOL. I was just thinking about how American T. was shamed by the very pregnant Danesa, who scampered up without problem, leaving him breathless behind. Haha…
