Shanghai is the Bomb

Sorry Linyi, you just don’t rate! This morning I took the metro to the French Concession area, wandered around enjoying the sunshine, which I think will disappear tomorrow, and finally settled down for a late lunch at Wagas, a local cafe chain that serves coffee, sandwiches, pasta & salads. Best of all, they have free wifi. So here I am sipping a latte while typing on my eeePC and just generally feeling urbane. There is an interesting mix of people here – businessmen reading newspapers, expat ladies who lunch, tourists, locals on lunch break.

I can’t even imagine what it must be like to have all of this at your fingertips everyday. I feel like a hayseed country girl gone to the big city. Shanghai ren (people) are just cool. It is like another country over here in a first tier city! (I think Linyi is something like 3rd tier.) And why am I surprised by this every time I visit Shanghai?

Just so that I know I am truly in civilization, I’m headed down to H&M after I finish my coffee. H&M is wonderful. Trendy, inexpensive clothing… and when you’re inside one you can pretend you are in any city in the world since they are pretty much all the same. I’m not one for homogeneity (is that a word?) but I can’t deny the pleasure of H&M. Gotta love those Swedes. First Ikea now H&M. I’m part Swedish, you know. I wonder if I can get a discount?

Okay, enough rambling…
