Enough With The Rain

in China, Shanghai, Travel

Another day in Shanghai and it rained all damn day long. For the first 15 minutes it was hardly a bother. It’s actually a novelty – Shanghai in the rain. Sure, we’ll go out and walk through the downtown, the rain is not a nuisance at all. A few hours later I want to strangle old man weather.

We spent the day on Nanjing East Road – a major shopping paradise. Come to think of it, Shanghai is pretty much just one big shopping mall. There are shopping centers on every corner and cute little shops lining all the streets. I’m convinced people here just consume for a living. What’s that about this being a communist country? Nah… The Nanjing Road area was a nice contrast to the French Concession, where we spent most of yesterday. The French Concession is made up of little lanes, low old style houses and tons of boutique shops. Nanjing Road is all about big, tall, boisterous and neon. Too bad it rained!

Since we ventured out of the hotel a little later than expected, our first mission was to get some breakfast… I mean lunch. Since we are currently in the “Ladies Who Lunch” role, we decided to try Kathleen’s 5, a chic little restaurant on the top floor of the so cute Shanghai art museum. Pictures will be uploaded when I am not so tired. The food was divine! I had duck breast with some kind of phyllo pastry “cigar” and the cuñada had swordfish with a goat cheese ravioli. Very good and very not Chinese! I can’t help myself when I am in Shanghai. I need a taste of something more exotic than my everyday Chinese cuisine.

The late afternoon was spent sharpening our bargaining skills at our favorite back alley market. I’m very pleased with the gorgeous brown leather handbag I scored for a very nice price.

We ended the day with a subway trip out to the Shanghai suburbs to meet up with my good friend Ivy, a Sichuan girl who used to work with the DH and I in Linyi. She’s now a fancy office lady in Shanghai and it was great catching up with her over delicious special Shanxi noodles. I think the cuñada was a little overwhelmed with the dishes and the use of chopsticks. How did I ever let her get away without using chopsticks for almost two whole days!?

Now I am exhausted but excited about our trip to Yangshuo tomorrow. More from there. Since it will be raining just about everyday, there might not be anything else to do but blog!
