West Street in the Rain, Yangshuo, China

Yangshuo, in southeastern China’s Guangxi Province, was once a relaxing stop on the world backpacker trail. Now it has exploded into a full blown tourist town, particularly popular with large Chinese tour groups. West Street runs from the nearby Li riverbank to the center of town and is lined with souvenir shops and cafes. It is mayhem, even in the rain.

This shot is fabulous. To often I put my camera away when it rains but I shouldn’t. The overcastr sky and the wetness make the colors pop. This really gives a sense of place.

Thanks, Tim! I had my DSLR tucked away most of the day because of the rain, but brought it out at a cafe with covered outdoor seating areas and got this shot. I saw quite a few tourists with big cameras decked out in special camera “rain coats.”

That’s one of the things I loved about this street – crazy busy but bursting with life & color! Especially since the buildings were generally all gray and white.

Yea, I’ve been neglecting Photo Friday the last few weeks. First I was busy and then on holiday and I find it very difficult to blog while I’m traveling. I’m not the greatest travel blogger. :0! Explosion to the senses is a great way to describe China! Sight and smells!

Add in all the souvenir vendors calling out to just about everyone trying to get them into their store, people chatting on mobile phones, masses of people constantly moving, smells of bbq and restaurants wafting by… very chaotic! I’m glad that comes through in the photo because this was probably the one moment where I felt most relaxed!!

Rainy days often do make the bright colors more brilliant by contrast…unless you’re stuck in a real downpour!
This shot is a great example of that.

I love your photos! You’re doing Chinese tourism a great service I have to say!

P.S. I also enjoy your take on the aviation industry and since reading your blog, I’ve actually used your word “nerbulent” the last time I flew. What are your thoughts on the AirFrance disaster?

Thanks so much! And I’m so glad that nerbulent has come in handy for you! I will be commenting on the Air France disaster in an upcoming post. It hasn’t done much for my fear of flying, that’s for sure. Very sad.
