Good-Bye to the Hole

Where Everybody Knows Your Name

Whoa, where have I been!? Canoeing, eating, walking, people watching, going to the beach, visiting with friends, and in general enjoying my vacation. It’s about to end, though, so I’d better enjoy as much as I can.

Last night we spent a few hours at a closing party for a neighborhood bar where we have spent lots of time over the last 8 years. We used to come to this bar in the early afternoons after lunch, when most everyone was working or sleeping the siesta. We’d drink coffee and read the newspaper or watch Discovery Channel. Sometimes, if there were a few more people around, we’d play cards.

It’s the kind of bar where people know you, where dogs are welcome, where you can have a coffee or a cocktail, where you can watch futbol in a group, where you can relax. It’s like an extension of your living room, although this one was a probably a little grubbier than your living room. (It is sometimes known as “the hole.”)

After 14 years, it has closed it’s doors. Good-bye Rincon de Asturias!
